Currently, in Punjab Province there is a range of 23 to 137 acres of cultivated lands against one tractor in different districts with an average of 57 acres against one tractor i.e. Tractor to cultivated farmland ratio is 57. Although this ratio is far better as compared to rest of the country but still it is far below the international standards. The level of mechanization has a significant positive impact on the cost, output value, income and return rate of all types of crops. For every 1% increase in the level of mechanization, the yields of all crops, grain crops and cash crops increase by 1.2151, 1.5941 and 0.4351%, respectively (Jiquan Peng et al 2022). Currently, there are 541000 tractors functional in the province. Provision of 20,000 tractor to the farmers through subsidy will increase level of mechanization upto 3.69% which means there would be significant improvement in yield of all corps i.e. more than 5%.
Support in this sector has been planned to be provided to the farming community with the assumption to increase yields and exports of primary crops, fruit and vegetables products – and in doing so become an important supplier for the region. Moreover, Punjab Province is blessed to have alluvial fertile soils of 31.5 million acres with less than 140% cropping intensity against its potential to plant at least two crops in a year i.e.200% cropping intensity. Number of schemes for distribution of tractors and farm machinery has been executed in previous years in Punjab and to continue this program further, a massive agriculture mechanization program through distribution of tractors of variant horse power with different subsidy levels for economic and sustainable farming units has been proposed to attain the required strength of farm mechanization in Punjab |
